HY ENERGY CONFERENCE

The future is hydrogen

HY ENERGY – NOVEMBER 3RD

P&J LIVE ABERDEEN

Hydrogen has emerged as a new energy vector capable of driving change across the value chain with myriad applications from decarbonising the grid to fuelling transportation. Seen as a core component of the energy transition and allied to Carbon Capture & Storage and the offshore oil & gas and renewables sectors, hydrogen can be produced in “blue” and “green” versions and offers huge potential for meeting net zero goals. But how far and how fast will this “new” economy grow, how can the UKCS through its operating base in Aberdeen take a lead and what policies, technology & investment are required to accelerate transition.

SESSION 1

THE MACRO PICTURE

Setting the scene for what follows, this session analyses the outlook for hydrogen from a policy (Government, international hub-and-spoke) and markets (pricing, demand, investment) perspective.

KEYNOTE PROJECT – ACORN

ACORN is a world-leading project with 2 stages focussed on CCS coupled with hydrogen production through steam reformation of North Sea natural gas to produce clean hydrogen and the sequestration of the CO2. It is a first-mover project and catalyst for growth for the region and is designated as a European Project of Common Interest.

SESSION 2

CREATING A HYDROGEN ECONOMY

This session analyses in turn the building blocks needed to create a vibrant hydrogen economy. Focus is given to supply (from where? scale/capacity? Blue vs green?), the technology (steam reformation, fuel cells, electrolysis), the infrastructure (grid, storage) and the demand side (transportation, industry). To be truly identified as a new energy vector all boxes must be ticked so who are the main stakeholders and what plans/projects exist?

SESSION 3

THE WIDER PICTURE HYDROGEN, CCS & THE ENERGY TRANSITION

Hydrogen is a potentially abundant, cheap and flexible fuel type that ticks a lot of boxes towards sustainability goals. But it doesn’t stand alone. Coupled with CCS and viewed as a key component of the energy transition, hydrogen has the potential to drive change in the global energy sector. This session frames discussion of hydrogen as an energy source in the wider energy value chain and where alignment exists with other energy vectors and stakeholders.

SESSION 4

FUTURE PREDICTIONS: HOW FAR & HOW FAST?

The energy sector frequently throws up new hot trends that compete for attention and investment. Renewables, particularly offshore wind, have merited the hype for every success there have been false dawns so does hydrogen properly establish itself as the new energy vector for the here and now? Is this a VHS vs Betamax scenario on transportation with electrification? How quickly can the grid achieve a 20% hydrogen mix? Is the play more realistically around local/regional distribution systems? How quickly can industry adopt H2 as a feedstock? Will IOCs or RES operators play the leading role?
